Thoughts on Marketing

This week we read this article called, "In Praise of the Purple Cow." To give a brief idea of what this article consisted of, Seth Godin described this regular occurrence that happens with branding and marketing that has become "old." To better explain, Godin starts with sharing a story about him and his family.

When Godin's family found themselves driving through France, they were entranced with all of the "storybook cows grazing in lovely pastures" next to the road. Though as exciting as the sight of these cows were initially, after a while Godin's family became desensitized to the sight of these cows. In fact, by the end of their trip, they stopped noticing them all together.

After considering the turn of events, Seth Godin argued that if they were to see a purple cow on the side of the road, their eyes would have been reopened to the sight that they use to love when they first arrived in France. In business, this is considered smart or even targeted marketing.

If a company can strategically place these "purple cows" throughout their branding and marketing, the idea is that the people they are selling to will have their eyes reopened to the ingeniousness of this hypothetical company. In order to succeed in this principle of entrepreneurship, we must be willing to take risks and put those purple cows in places they can be seen!
